Welcome to Kura (Early Childhood)
In Kura, our tamariki are cared for by Aunty Kathy and Aunty Tash. Api'i Te Uki Ou embraces a play-based learning approach with intentional curriculum connections for our three and four year olds. We believe learning happens naturally through play, integrating engaging educational experiences that align with the Cook Islands Ministry of Education ECE Curriculum. This ensures play is both joyful and foundational, beautifully preparing our children for a smooth transition into Karavia and primary school.
Our Daily Routine
Our gates open at 7:50am, giving children a chance to connect and enjoy free play until 2:00pm when the day ends. Our day blends structured learning with child-led exploration.

Play Based Learning
Playing is at the root of everything it is to be human – from building relationships, feeling good about yourself and about life, to having the literacy and numeracy skills to live a full and rewarding life.
Humans have always played. It is how evolution makes sure we learn the things we need to survive as a species – we play to practise the things we will do when we are older; we play in pretend worlds that help us to imagine a new future; we play to develop motor skills, thinking skills and habits of mind (dispositions) that enable our species to survive and to thrive.
Time to play is important at home and at school. More and more schools today understand and use the power of play to engage children in learning and to develop a strong sense of wellbeing.
Apaipai Karere
Apaipai Karere is an approach to communication (how we carry messages). Meeting our tamariki at their level to support them through big emotions is important. We value open communication with parents to ensure every child feels secure and understood.
